Fire Safety Engineering

Using Performance Based engineering design, our Fire Safety Engineering specialists are able to assist with realising a project’s Vision while maintaining an acceptable and compliant risk profile.

Our engineers have experience in delivering a range of Performance Based engineering solutions, including solutions applicable to:

  • Fire Resistance Level (FRL) of Building Elements.
  • Occupant Evacuation and Provisions for Escape.
  • Fire Protection Systems.
  • Fire Brigade Provisions.
  • Dangerous Goods Storage and Handling.
  • Lithium Ion Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Risks.

Fire Services Engineering

Compliant Fire Protection and Detection Systems are required to protect buildings of various size and occupancy. We have experience in audit and assessment of new and existing buildings to determine the systems required to achieve compliance with the National Construction Code (NCC/BCA) and design systems that comply with the relevant Australian Standards. Compliant systems include:

  • Automatic Fire Sprinkler Systems.
  • Fire Hydrant and Hose Reels.
  • Dedicated Fire Services Water Pump and Tank Assemblies.
  • Portable Fire Extinguishers.
  • Point Type and Aspirating Fire Detection.
  • Fire Detection Control and Indicating Equipment (FDICE) Infrastructure (formally Fire Indicator Panel).
  • Occupant Warning Systems (OWS) / Emergency Warning and Intercom Systems (EWIS).
  • Networked FDICE/FIP Infrastructure, including Alarm Consequence Mapping.

Particular assets and occupancies require fire protection and detection systems that are above the minimum level of compliance presented in the NCC/BCA. This additional Specialised Fire Protection and Detection Systems are required to address a specific risk or characteristic of the asset/environment. Our engineers work with our clients to understand the asset requiring protection and the intended risk mitigation outcome. We then present well informed options to assist with the Design and Documentation of Special Hazard Fire Protection and Detection Systems that are tailored to the fire safety risk presented and meet client expectations.

Protection Systems include:

  • Inert and Synthetic Gaseous Suppression.
  • Hybrid Fog Type Water Mist Suppression.
  • Direct Equipment / Enclosure Suppression.
  • Foam Fire Protection.

Detection Systems include:

  • Aspirating Smoke Detection.
  • Infrared Fire Detection.
  • Lithium Ion Off Gassing Fire Detection.

Design Management

Multi-disciplinary projects, audits and studies present situations where consultants and industry partners need to align to achieve the intended project outcome. This project outcome needs to be aligned with the client expectations and regulatory objectives. The role of a Design Manage is closely aligned with that of a Project Manager. Our Design Managers seek to ensure that the multi-disciplinary team is coordinated in their design and delivery objectives while ensuring the solution produced aligns with client objectives and regulatory/process requirements.

Defence is a Sector where our engineers specialise in providing Design Management consulting to ensure that the design team provide a solution that is compliant to The Australian Department of Defence design requirements and also meets the gated reporting and documentation process required for Defence projects. Our Design Mangers have experience in leading the following processes:

  • Scope and Feasibility Studies.
  • Design reporting at key project milestones.
  • Estate Data updates using the Garrison Estate Management System (GEMS).
  • Management of the handover / takeover (HOTO) process.
  • Use of the SMART Infrastructure Checklist and other Defence-specific tools.

Special Hazard and Risk Management

Special hazard systems are those where the prescriptive requirements of the NCC/BCA do not suitably address the hazards and risks presented. These can include:

  • Dangerous Goods Storage.
  • Fuel Storage and Transfer.
  • Process Applications and Lithium Ion Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS, also known as UPS systems).

Our team are experienced in providing risk based consultancy (in accordance with ISO31000) to reduce risks So Far As Reasonably Practical (SFARP).
